Oklaunion is located at the junction of U.S. Highways 283, 70, and 183 in northeastern Wilbarger County, approximately nine miles east of Vernon and the nearest large city is Wichita Falls. Even though it is an unincorporated community that reached a population of 162 in 2010, it also has a post office established in 1889 with a zip code of 76373. It was formerly called Mayflower but was renamed to Oklaunion around 1888 by Joseph S. "Buckskin" Works with an aim of attracting the Frisco line to the community for connection with the Fort Worth and Denver City Railway. Although the nearby Vernon was chosen as the site for the linkage, Oklaunion still prospered as a stop on the Fort Worth and Denver City line. There is also a coal-fired power station, named Oklaunion Power Plant with a capacity of 650 megawatts.
