Ore City was named due to the presence of ore deposits found here before the Civil War with several small ore miners from the 1860s through 1900 until there were efforts of doing industrial ore mining in 1910. The city is situated at the junction of U.S. Highway 259 and Farm to Market Road 1649 (or FM 1649), thirteen miles northeast of Gilmer in eastern Upshur County. Ore City was originally part of the William Murray League and had its first settlement in the early 1850s by a group from Haywood County, Tennessee. The town of Ore City was platted around 1911 and a post office was opened in 1912. It was the second-largest city in Upshur County in 1990. With a total area of 2.3 square miles, it reached a population of 1,216 in 2017.
