Pettus was named Dry Medio after the creek of the same name before the Civil War in the 1850s. It was then renamed to honor one of the most prominent of the area's early settlers, John F. Pettus. This census-designated place (CDP) in Bee County, Texas is located in northern Bee County U.S. Route 181 passes through the community, leading south 16 miles (26 km) to Beeville, the county seat, and north 14 miles (23 km) to Kenedy. In 1866, it became a stop on the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway after J. S. Hodges donated land for platting the town. Oil was discovered in 1929 and with a total area of 5.8 square miles, it has a population of 558 in 2010. Pettus is also served by the Pettus Independent School District and home to the Pettus Secondary School Eagles.
