Poynor is located in southeastern Henderson county. It was once a famous railroad town in the county. The name of the town came from D. H. Poynor, a surveyor of the railroad line. The town was first known as Ida Valley because of its location centered in the hills west of Frankston. The post office was called Poyner from its opening in 1902 to 1919, when the name was corrected to Poynor. Poynor was home to the historic Milner Grist Mill, one the few that continued to operate until today. Poynor cemetery is listed as a Texas Historical Cemetery. In 2000, the population was estimated to be 314.
