The US Bay City serves as the seat of Matagorda County with an estimated population of 17,614, according to the 2010 census report. Statistics from the US Census Bureau indicate that the city sits on an area of 8.5 square miles. Formerly named Bay Prairie, the city is crisscrossed by creeks leading into the bay that forms a major attraction to tourists in the area. Bay City is characterized by mild to cool winters while the summers are mostly hot and humid. The original inhabitants used to make tubular goods, including casing and drill pipes, among others, for a livelihood.
