Earth is a small city in Lamb County. It was established by William Halsell, who platted the townsite in 1924. He originally named the city Fairlawn or Fairleen, but when the record showed an existing town in Texas that goes by that name, the townsmen submitted their suggestions. The name Earth came to existence in 1925. It was submitted by Ora Hume Reeves, who later became the owner of the city hotel. Earth was incorporated in 1947. By 1980, the city had 1,512 residents. Its population continued to increase over the last few decades, which was unusual among West Texas towns. Perhaps, it was the improved production of local farmlands and the establishment of a generating plant, which contributed to the city’s growth. To date, Earth remains to be a grain and cotton center.
