Grulla or La Grulla is a city in Starr County. It was founded in 1836 by Juan Santiago Longoria, the third great grandfather of the famous actress Eva Longoria. La Grulla is a Spanish-speaking community; hence, the city was named after the Spanish word for “the crane,” in which these kinds of birds became abundant in the nearby ponds. The post office was granted in 1912 under the name Grulla; however, the locals has been calling it La Grulla. In 1940, the town had 250 residents. To date, the city has both a Catholic and Mennonite church, an elementary school, and a junior high school. An old brick church can also be found in the area. As of 2010, its population was 1,622.
