Tenaha town is situated in Shelby County in the US state of Texas. According to the 2010 census, the town’s population was 1,160. The town was founded in 1885 and named by Hicks family members after Tenehaw Municipality, which was Shelby County’s original name. The town lies at the intersection of US highways 96, 59, and 84. The town served as a railway shipping point when the railroad was under construction through the county. A post office was opened here in 1886 with James Woodfin serving as the postmaster. By 1890, Tenaha had a school, three churches, several stores and about 200 residents.
