Timpson is a city in Shelby County, in the U.S. state of Texas. It was located at the intersection of US 87, 84, and 59, northwest of the county. It was founded in 1885 when a railroad was built in the area and was named after P. B. Timpson who was the railroad engineer at that time. Later that year, a post office was granted and the town soon became the most significant shipping point in the county. As early as 1890, Timpson had an industrial and commercial base that included two sawmills and a canning factory. In 1925, the town became a well-known shipping center for lignite. Timpson experienced its zenith a couple of years later with roughly 2,500 residents. As the peak collapsed in the 1930s, the number of residents slowly decreased as well. As of 2010, it has a population of 1,155.
