Originally known as Ratty Town after a man who opened the first store, then changed to Swindall in honor of George Swindall who donated land, and finally renamed to Van in the mid-1890s, the town is located in Van Zandt County. The town was named after two citizens, Henry Vance, the first postmaster and Vannie Tunnell. In October 1929 oil was discovered which led the town to boom from a rural farming community to a substantial community. This led to the construction of the railway. During World War II, the population declined. In the 1940s mechanization of oilfields revived the town again.
