5 Stones Artisan Brewery

Craft Brewery in New Braunfels

5 Stones Artisan Brewery was founded in 2012 by Seth Weatherly. Currently based in New Braunfels, 2017 was a big year for 5 Stones. Starting out as a hobby homebrewer until the company’s founding, Seth now works with Garrett Crowell, a former head brewer at another company. Seth also moved the brewery to its present-day 19-acre location from its previous 1200 square feet space in a Cibolo industrial park. With his first brew, the award-winning Aloha Piña, and dozens of other handcrafted recipes, the company continues to brew seasonal artisan beers at the new location. The place is “a little hidden… with abundant outdoor seating and space for dogs to play and kids to run”. Complementing the indoor setup is an outdoor seating area. It's a “beautiful and relaxing atmosphere” with fire pits, food trucks on occasion, and live music. In case you’re wondering, “5 Stones” refers to the little-known bible trivia that David carefully chose 5 stones to beat Goliath.

5×5 Brewing Co

The mission: produce consistent, quality craft beers “while maintaining a strict code of ethics and integrity” and provide “dedicated selfless service”.  This craft brewery based in South Texas is owned by a team of veterans.  The name of the company is actually a radio operator’s term to describe “signal and clarity (is) at its best”. The team operates their business with military precision. Quick and efficient restocking and distribution of inventory, for example, has fueled their growth. The military theme is consistent, too. They have beers called Brunette Bombshell, FUBARR, and Teufel Hunden, for starters. Some of their beers are available year-round, while others are seasonal recipes. There are some in the works, too. Scout for them in over 100 bars and restaurants in the Rio Grande Valley.

8th Wonder Brewery

Craft Brewery in Houston

When the world was introduced to the Houston Astrodome in 1965, it was the world’s first air-conditioned domed stadium. People dubbed it the “8th wonder of the world”. The founders of 8th Wonder Brewery jokingly named their company after the moniker of this Houston icon as they brewed craft beers in a dome-like warehouse, 8th Wonder has been brewing their beers since 2013, and promises “fermented fun in East Downtown Houston”. The brewery currently has 7 beers available year-round, with seasonal recipes lined up throughout the year. Some beers are available in 6 or 4 packs, while others are available only on draft or showcased as a limited release. Their first hits, The Chosen One Coconut Ale and Roo’s Red Ale continue to be bestsellers. The taproom at Sherman serves both the mainstays as well as seasonal and special release brews. It also serves food courtesy of the Grilled Cheese Company & Pies, a company owned by Jeremy’s parents. Here’s how good their beers are from a reviewer: “I never thought I would be one of those people… who will drive for a great beer…[even if it’s] about 45 minutes outside of Dallas.” The brewery hosts trivia nights movie nights, too, so go catch a Sasquatch!

Acopon Brewing Co

Craft Brewery in Dripping Springs

The Acopon Brewing Company was established by the same group who gave Dripping Springs The Barber Shop. Established to provide a focus on English-style ales, the team opened another taproom just a stone’s throw away from the Barber Shop's location. The name is taken from a “restorative or cordial medicine or application”. The taproom opened in September 2017. It provides a selection of craft beers – not just English ales. It even has wine, cider, and sodas for non-fans of craft beers. The brewery follows an “old world model where each town in Germany or England would have their own favorite local brewery”, and the beer could only be found and enjoyed there. They have board games for use by guests, and welcome dogs into the taproom. They don’t serve food, so guests are also welcome to bring food in.

Established in 2014 by the Scripps family, they first released their lineup of year-round beers in 2017. In October 2018, the Fredericksburg-based brewery opened their authentic 120-acre Old World German-style destination brewery. Modeled after a German castle, it features a German-style biergarten with several seating areas, a tasting room, an event center for special events, and a restaurant. Angelina Brewing Co. is a newly-opened addition to Lufkin’s historic downtown. It’s a craft brewery and restaurant “born as part of a vision of restoring historic communities”.  Founded in 2017, it opened its doors to the public in June 2019. Anvil Brewing

Craft Brewery in Pittsburg

Anvil Brewing is housed in an old and historically significant building in Pittsburg. Armed with an idea to create a gathering place for a small town’s community, husband and wife Byron and Kristin Aldredge moved into Pittsburg and established the brewery. The long-shuttered Pilgrim's Pride Feed Store was once part of the town’s booming chicken business, but the 100-year-old building stood abandoned since 1961. With an economic development fund grant from the city as seed money, the Aldredges’ idea soon took flight. They installed craft beer equipment, refurbished the place, cooked up some mouthwatering menu items, and the result was a great venue that was a combination pub, dance hall with live music, and venue for private events. At any given time, they have five craft beers on tap, and their customers rave about the sandwiches. “Best Reuben ever!”

AquaBrew

Craft Brewery in San Marcos

The AquaBrew is a brewery, beer garden, restaurant, and events center located in downtown San Marcos. Opened in March 2016, it’s a spot where “craft beer, culinary delights, local music, and community come together” and aims to stimulate all the senses. They have about 10 varieties on tap, and also usually feature a couple of guest breweries as well. Growlers and crowlers are available so you can take home a favorite brew. The place is open daily with both lunch and dinner menus. On weekend nights, they feature live music.

Armadillo Ale Works

Craft Brewery in Denton

It was a long road to opening their own brewery for Armadillo Ale Works founders Bobby Mullins and Yianni Arestis. The brewery finally opened its doors on June 1, 2018, but their story starts much earlier. It actually starts in 2010 when the resilient duo won a grant to pursue their dream of brewing their own beers. Since then, they’ve run a successful Kickstarter campaign, had a location deal that went south, and overcame alienating their fans because of a supply disruption.  Uniquely, the brewery claims the distinction of having won prestigious industry awards without ever having its own brewing facility. Now settled at their Denton location, they continue to craft their award-winning beers and sodas. They even brew coffee at the taproom. The space is also available for special event venue rentals, with liquid refreshments from the brewery, of course.

Astral Brewing

Craft Brewery in Houston

Astral Brewing just opened in March 2019 and the reviews after just six months of operation blow the competition away. Or you might even say out of the galaxy. Co-founders Jose Ceja and Alex McDonald seem to have a winner on their hands, with these kinds of reviews:
  • Overall this is a perfect Kolsch. I struggle with rating beers a solid 5.0 because that means there’s nothing they can do to improve it. But a perfect appearance, a perfect aroma, a perfect mouthfeel and flavor… well, that’s a 5 star beer, y’all.” – from Beer Chronicle for their Astral Kraftwerk Kolsch
  • “Very fun little brewery! They have ping pong tables, good beers, music, food trucks and games galore.” – a random review from a random review site
The brewery is also very dog-friendly and currently offers “$2 off selected beers during televised local favorite football games”.

Athens Brewing Co.

Craft Brewery in Athens

Athens Brewing Co. is a craft brewery in the heart of downtown Athens. The Pierce family owns and operates the brewery, which is located in a historic brick building in the main square. The same family also owns Tara Vineyard & Winery, the oldest winery in Henderson County, and Tara Inn, an authentic circa 1880s house consisting of four large guestrooms overlooking the family’s vineyards. The brewery has usually about ten quality beers on tap, with new ones constantly being introduced. They bring back old favorites, too. The menu receives very positive reviews on review sites as well. “Blue cheeseburger was awesome… but the lava fries were by far our favorite!” There's live music on most Fridays and Saturdays, and there's a spacious patio where one can hang out during good weather. They’re kid- and dog-friendly, too.

Aurellia’s Bottle Shop and Brewhouse

Craft Brewery in El Paso

The ultramodern brewing system in Aurellia’s Bottle Shop and Brewhouse gave it its name. Quite the mouthful, AURELLIA is actually an acronym that uses an artificial intelligence-based system. It makes the brewing process energy efficient, sustainable, and environmentally friendly. The electric system also helps owner Justin Gibson overcome his physical limitations, a result of an accident caused by a drunk driver. To reduce Aurellia's carbon footprint further, there are plans to maximize the use of solar energy. Justin has worked in different aspects of the beer industry. He was an avid home-brewer, and worked in "brewing, brewery operations, bartending, front of house management, distribution, sales, brand acquisitions, and logistics. Aurellia’s just opened in March 2019, and he says he just works there because it's really AURELLIA who runs the place. Eventually, Justin hopes Aurellia's becomes a one-stop shop that offers “quality, variety, (and) a truly unique experience”. Aurellia's Bottle Shop and Brewhouse is listed as one of the 4 Best El Paso Breweries for Local Beer and Food. Check out the link to read more!

They are a nationally top-ranked pizza place, and come in at #53 in the top 100 Independent Pizza Restaurants in the United States. B&J’s Pizza has a long storied history dating back to the 1970s. After changing hands (and business models) a couple of times, Jack and Kathy Baker and their son Christopher have been running B&Js since 1987. (Kathy Baker’s maiden name was Jarvis, thus, B&J’s is Baker and Jarvis!) From its original 1,500 ft2, the restaurant is now at two locations totaling 13,300 ft2 in Corpus Christi. These locations are at 6335 S Padre Island Dr and 6662 S Staples St. One of the restaurant's attractions was their wide selection of local and imported beers available to customers.

B-52 Brewing

Craft Brewery in Conroe

B-52 Brewing has an extensive list of craft beers that “push beer brewing into unexpected and surprising territory”. With 19 beers currently on the menu, the brewery’s craft beers are not the only attraction that brings people to their 7-acre location. Co-founders and brothers Chad and Brent Daniel made sure that, when they opened in 2014, their passion for craft beers is evident in each brew. Their unique creations, however, reach new heights when paired with the stunning surroundings. The brewery is located near a national park and the setting is “park-like” amidst towering trees. There are ping-pong tables, live music, and a food truck or three. There’s indoor and outdoor seating in their taproom, and wine, lemonade, or house-made root beer is available for those who didn’t come for the beer. Supervised kids and leashed dogs are also welcome.

Bakfish Brewing Company

Craft Brewery in Pearland

Bakfish Brewing Company has a distinction that no one can ever take away -- Pearland’s first craft brewery and brewpub. Established by friends Brian Allen and Kris Szecsy, they quit their jobs to establish the brewery in 2016. Houston metro area’s third largest city was somewhat of a “beer desert” because it had no local brewery of its own prior to its opening. With a 2,000 square foot air-conditioned taproom and a large covered patio, the brewery accommodates seating for about 300. There are five flagship brews including I Tell You Wit (a Belgian wit bier), Golden Ale (a blond ale), and Defying Gravity double IPA, with rotating seasonal and small batch releases at the taproom. The brewery does not serve food but has scheduled rotating food trucks onsite. Guests can also have food delivered or bring their own at the family- and dog-friendly brewpub.

BS Brewing

Craft Brewery in Seguin

BS Brewing is a little patch of country heaven between New Braunfels and Seguin that offers a selection of craft beers and other drinks. It is an “innovative and up-and-coming brewery” that is kid friendly and dog friendly. You will be impressed with their growing variety of ales. They currently have 12 beers on tap, 5 craft sodas, Wine, Sangria, and they are proudly “supporting 5 other Hill Country Breweries.” You can hangout on the patio with a Pecan Ale and you just might find yourself in the middle of one of their live music gigs, cookouts, or any other of the various assortments of get together and good times. No Tv's, no distractions, just a fire pit, good beer and great company!

Baa Baa Brewhouse

Craft Brewery in Brookshire

Baa Baa Brewhouse owners Marcus and Kinga Wunderle have fond memories of childhood nursery rhymes. They established in April 2016 a very family- and pet-friendly nano-brewery in Brookshire. There are toys and an extensive play area for the kids, and treats made from spent grains for four-legged friends. The brewery itself has a very relaxed and casual atmosphere with several picnic tables for their patrons. It is also available for special events. Aside from this, it is also a "small spot packed with great beer and an amazing staff". Also offers "absolutely delicious beers! Though beer is a bit of a strange way to describe what they've got going on with some of their offerings. For starters, there are a few beer-beers: a blonde, kolesch, and several varieties of stouts. Each good in their own right, but the beers that set Baa Baa apart are their fruited sours".
