Central District Brewing

Craft Brewery in Austin

The Central District Brewing – as the name implies – is centrally located in Downtown Austin. Opened in March 2019, they opened to serve local Austin beers. Starting May 2019, however, the brewery released their first batch of brews. The brewery is “very well located” at the ground floor of the parking garage next to the Austin Convention Center. That means you won’t ever have to worry about parking! It’s also “an easy walk to the nightlife on 6th Street”. There are plenty of restaurants to choose from nearby, and it’s “close to the Hilton and Fairmont”. That affirms the popular real estate saying of “location, location, location”! And the beers? The brewery won gold at the 2019 Great American Beer Festival within less than a year of operation for their Wit-tington and beat more established breweries. They’ve also started releasing their first sodas for non-beer drinkers!

Central Machine Works Brewery

Craft Brewery in Austin

Located in East Austin, Central Machine Works Brewery features a beer garden with family-friendly areas, food trucks, and a stage for live music. This East Austin brewery and beer hall got its name from the former tenant of the preserved industrial space, the “Central Machine Works” shop. The brewery came about after a group of Austinites fell in love with the space. Central Machine Works Brewery offers a wide range of beers from “American lagers, ales, and IPAs,” as well as some international styles like “kolsch, pilsners and English brown ales.” They also have seasonal beers and guest taps. Cibolo Creek Brewing

Craft Brewery in Boerne

Cibolo Creek Brewing Co. owned by the Mazour and Wolosin family is a family-owned and operated neighborhood brewpub in Boerne. The casual, family-friendly atmosphere serves as a backdrop to the family’s delicious beers and food. The brewery maintains about 5 year-round and seasonal beers brewed at their “large batch” 7-barrel system. These mainstays include the Boerne Blonde, their number one seller. They also have the Weiss Hefeweizen, named after the original owners of the house where Cibolo Creek is located. Their “small batch” 1-barrel system, meanwhile, rotates the available beers every three to four weeks. At CCB (how the owners refer to the brewery), the beers are not the only things on the menu. They also feature seasonal farm-fresh food sourced from sustainable, local farms. That means visitors are assured that the chicken, beef, eggs, etc., prepared at the restaurant is humanely raised and free from antibiotics and hormones.

Circle Brewing Company

Craft Brewery in Austin

Nashville natives Ben Sabel and Judson Mulherin founded Circle Brewing Company in 2010 making it the oldest microbrewery in North Austin. Adhering to the principles of the German Purity Law, the duo believes in combining the Law "with a little creativity and Texas ingenuity”. This philosophy results in award winning beers including their Alibi Blonde, which won silver at the 2014 World Beer Cup. In 2016, their Archetype Historical IPA won gold at the 2016 edition. Their Doppel Blur Imperial Hefe, meanwhile, took bronze at the 2018 Great American Beer Festival. Circle Brewing is popular with the Austin community because they host several unique events each year. For example, in 2019, the 0.5K Marathon at the brewery's parking lot is on its 6th year. With beer in hand, donors participate in a race and proceeds go to a different charity each year. Another unique event had them team up with Equality Texas during Pride Month. The brewery sold Fanny Pack Kolsch in rainbow-colored cans and donated $1 for each can sold to the non-profit.

City Acre Brewing Co.

Craft Brewery in Houston

Just 10 minutes north of downtown Houston, the City Acre Brewing finally opened in 2016 and Houston fell in love. The four-year delay did the owners a favor. They used the place as an events venue while they completed their Texas permits. Meanwhile, the plants and trees in the area had time to grow, and the brewpub had time to perfect its beers and recipes. When they finally opened, the raised vegetable gardens became a source for the seasonal farm-to-table menu. “I found the setting enchanting,” says one review, “(and) gardeners will enjoy checking out (the garden).” With Adirondack chairs and picnic tables scattered about, “it was quite easy to spend a few hours enjoying the blossoming gardens,” says another. The beers on taps, of course, are getting rave reviews, too. In addition, the brewery offers beer cocktails, a selection of wines, and feature their own house-made sodas.

Compadre Brewing

Craft Brewery in Round Rock

Officially opened in the summer of 2019, Compadre Brewing is owned and operated by the Galvan family in Pflugerville/Round Rock. It’s a dog-friendly and family friendly brewery that started with a “Make Your Own Beer Kit” Christmas gift for Roel, the brewery’s owner and brewer. Together with his father Roy, the two set out to discover the world of craft beers, which culminated in their opening Compadre Brewing. As fate would have it, the family took over a short-lived brewery that used to exist at their present location. The brewery soft-opened with their Cinco De Cele(brew)cion last May 5, and served about 32 different craft beers on tap, including their own creations. A few months into their opening, the reviews have been great:
  • “It is awesome. Friendly staff, good beers and plenty of options of other local beers”
  • “Solid selection of beers”
  • “They like to push flavor profiles and add depth to the beer (which is) a good thing”

Craft Brewery in Conroe

Examples include their year-round beers Medusa (a Belgian dark strong), Striker (an American IPA), and Black Venom (their popular Imperial Stout). Seasonal beers are also available such as the farmhouse ale Sidewinder Saison. The brewery prefers “big, aggressive beers” and believes that one “(doesn’t) have to do a light beer to be successful”. This “aggressiveness” shows in their popular t-shirt merchandise featuring an angry-looking copperhead snake. At the brewery, guests can enjoy a choice of indoor or outdoor seating. The indoor area features an air-conditioned taproom. The outdoor area, meanwhile, has picnic tables and games, and can accommodate pets.

Cycler’s Brewing

Craft Brewery in Montgomery

According to Cycler's Brewing brewmaster and founder Clay Wick, “cycling and craft beer are kind joined at the hip”. After all, many look forward to a refreshing drink at the end of a long ride. Clay, who once worked for Coors, got “enthralled” with his first taste of craft beer, and subsequently fell in love with the many varieties available. It was then that he knew that he wanted to be a part of the creation process. Located inside the Sam Houston National Forest, Clay, his wife Tina, and the other owners of Cycler’s named the brewery after the sport popular in the forest. Their beers have cycling themes such as the cleverly named Ryed Hard. There’s also the DeRailleur, referring to the “mechanism that transfers the chain from one set of gears to another”. Together with the seven core beers, they also have a set of limited-release barrel-aged beers.

Mike is a veteran of the U.S. Navy and specialized in IT upon leaving the service. His brewing philosophy simply means he brews “the beers (he and his family) want to drink". The brewery currently has almost 50 beers available for rating on Untappd, which are all named after something in Winnsboro or in connection with the East Texas area. According to one review, the brewery's taproom is “small and cozy”. However, the beers are “nothing short of sudsy divine-ness”. In good weather, the outdoor area becomes a venue for corn hole and horseshoe games.

Opened to the public in August 2007, they initially started with just serving drinks to bar patrons and providing growler fills. In October 2019, they’ve started to offer gourmet food dishes to accompany the lineup of craft beers. Dancing Bear owner Paxton Dove teamed up with an old friend and chef Brandon Bailey, and both plan to rotate the menu just as the pub does with its drink selection.

They offer Darkside’s flagship beer, “Mark of the Yeast: 78666” which is referred to by Parker as a “dark medieval ale.” This beer is nourishing and the finish lingers. DeadBeach Brewery

Craft Brewery in El Paso

Gabe Montoya, Jason Hunt, and Justin Ordonez, the three owners of DeadBeach Brewery, are all local El Paso natives. Gabe was a former master brewer at another brewery, El Paso’s lone local brewery then, until it closed down. Joining forces with restaurateurs Jason and Justin, they established DeadBeach in 2013. The trio formally opened the brewery to the public in November 2015. Currently, they have about a dozen beers on tap, which they rotate constantly. They specialize in “big, bold beers (that) doesn’t hold back on the flavor”. The brewery’s beers are available in “over 300 taps across the city”. Appropriately enough, their slogan is “(beers) for El Paso, by El Paso”. Production is currently limited mostly for the El Paso beer market. Eventually, though, they hope to be able to distribute their beers nationwide. DeadBeach Brewery is listed as one of the 4 Best El Paso Breweries for Local Beer and Food. Denton County Brewing Company

Craft Brewery in Denton

Denton County Brewing Company is the brainchild of Seth and Jen Morgan. The husband and wife initially envisioned the brewery as “Denton’s second living room”, where Denton residents can “(hang) out on your couch”. These days, they call it Denton’s “adult playground (with) board games, trivia nights, delicious appetizers, and the coolest bar staff”. The brewery has been serving craft beers “born and brewed in Denton” since 2017. Besides their house brews, they also serve a selection of wine, sake, ciders, and beers from other local breweries. For $1,000, customers can buy a “Biersal”. With reference to German mythical folklore, Biersal members get a free beer for life. The “Augustine – The Extended Experience” at $295, meanwhile, gives members discounts to beers and early access to new beer releases, among other benefits.

Devil and the Deep Brewery

Craft Brewery in Galveston

Opened in February 2018, Devil and the Deep Brewery was the second craft brewery to open in Galveston. The brewery’s opening was the culmination of founder Eric Walker’s efforts and dreams. A native of Tucson, Arizona, Eric first joined the Navy and then the Army. In the course of his military career, he eventually transferred to Fort Hood, and in 2011, moved to Austin. After volunteering in various breweries, he decided to open his own brewery in 2016. Along the way, he almost shuttered his plans because of a foundation problem with the first building he leased. As luck would have it, someone else offered him another lease, and the rest, as they say, is history. With its deep blue sea motif, the brewery specializes in Belgian and rustic ales. There are retro arcade video games lined up on one wall, and the climate controlled spacious taproom has picnic table seating. There’s art on the walls, too!

Dirty Job Brewing

Craft Brewery in Mansfield

Dirty Job Brewing’s owners are husband and wife Derek and Lashawn Hubenak, and Derek’s best friend, Justin Watson. They named their brewery after the “dirty work” they did to get the brewery up and running. Fourteen months hence, after a modest start in 2017, the trio set out to expand their capacity in 2018. With a “forgivable loan” from the city of Mansfield, the team’s expanded operations now includes a kitchen. They are also able to produce larger quantities of their award-winning beers. The brewery’s location is in downtown Mansfield and one of its goals is to help in the revitalization of the area. Now that the brewery's founders have done their bit, they invite guests to enjoy the area’s shops, restaurants, and many art installations. Oh – and to keep up with the brewery’s events and what’s on tap, they’ve got an app to help you out!

Division Brewing

Craft Brewery in Arlington

Division Brewing owners Wade Wadlington, his wife Tami, and Sean Cooley probably never thought of it. Wade and Sean were homebrewers who favored different beer styles. Tami, meanwhile, does the marketing and management stuff. Together, they set out to establish and grow the brewery after opening in early 2015, but somehow, it has become more than just a brewery. A couple of years later, it’s been called an “unlikely cultural hub” by a writer for an online magazine. It all started when the group acquired the space that an art and clothing shop vacated in 2017. In its place, they opened a comic book store, a music store selling vinyl, CDs, cassettes, and memorabilia, and a space for live music. Today, the brewery has become a “perfect storm” for music, comics, and beer nerds. Catch up with them by downloading their app!

They brew onsite, which makes them a real brewhaus. They have a large selection of wine, too! And then, there’s the ducks and geese milling about the premises. Should they have called it the Dodging Duck and Geese Brewhaus? No one’s sure, but it’s definitely pet-friendly.  Come during Ducky Hour from 3pm to 6pm, and you get discounts on the beers, wines, and appetizer specials.
