Cotton Center is an unincorporated community in western Hale County. The ranchers developed the area in the late 1800s. In 1907, the Santa Fe Railroad company built the Plainview line through Hale County, introducing a new wave of settlers and farming operations. The settlers included children, so schools were soon built. In 1925, the community became a consolidated school district, with a small unincorporated community site that included three schools, cotton gins, and various businesses that supported the surrounding farms. The cotton gin was opened by J.C. Brown, a local businessman who was credited for naming the community. A decade after, the post office opened and the first irrigation well was drilled. Although Cotton Center was struck by a tornado in 1965, education has continued to be the town’s focus. In 1984, the community has reported seven businesses.
