Diboll is a city in Angelina County. It was named after J. C. Diboll, a local timber salesman and a major landowner in the area. The city was founded in 1894 when a sawmill was constructed near a railway. That same year, the town had its first school and by 1897, the town was granted a post office. Eleven years after, an additional sawmill was erected. Diboll, in its early days, was a company town. The mill built homes for its employees, which were rented to them. Between the early 1900s and the 1950s, the lumber company maintained a huge commissary that included a drugstore, a post office, a grocery, and a feed store until it was replaced by a shopping center. In 1962, the town was incorporated. Yet, Diboll remained a community that is economically oriented towards forest products. In 1973, the town became the corporate headquarters for one of the nation’s largest forest-product companies.
