The US census-designated place of Elmo is located in Kaufman County in the state of Texas. According to the 2010 census, it had a population of 768. It acquired its name from a T&P Railroad senior surveyor, Elmo Scott. In 1873, this unincorporated community got its first post office. The decision by the residents to declare it a sundown town in 1892 forced black residents to leave the community and prohibited other African Americans from living there. By 1883, Elmo served as a shipping point for wheat, cotton and corn. It had a district school, a flour mill, five churches and numerous grist and cotton mills.
