Gilchrist is an unincorporated community located in Galveston County in Texas. In 1990 and 2000 years the town’s population was around 750 residents. The town had an estimated population of around one thousand when Hurricane Ike attacked the town in 2008. The community was named after Gibb Gilchrist who rebuilt the rail line from High Island to Port Bolivar. The town’s post office was opened in 1950. The community’s public education system is being distributed by the High Island Independent School District. Some of the top tourist attractions located in Gilchrist are Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge, Rollover Pass, and Bolivar Peninsula Tourism and Visitors Center.
