Hankamer is an unincorporated community in Chambers County. In 1900, the Hankamer-Stowell Canal Company started irrigating large quantities of rice to bring an essential change for the community and its residents. In 1904, the post office was established under the name of Hankamer, after Ira Alvan Hankamer who was an early settler in the area. The population didn’t grow as much in Hankamer; however, in addition to the existing lumbermill, the discovery of oil and gas in the nearby Liberty County half a decade later increased the number of residents in the area. In 1983, the town had six businesses. As of 2000, its population was 525.
