Devers is a city in Liberty County. It was founded in the late 1830s when it was known as Dever’s Woods, and it was named after John Dever. In the late 1870s, a railroad has been expanded, putting a stop on the Texas and New Orleans rail line. In 1874, the city was granted a post office and the town’s name was shortened to Devers in 1892. Despite the community’s failure to grow substantially, water irrigation made up for a healthy rice culture. Hence, rice continues to be the town’s economic mainstay in addition to the discoveries of gas and oil that have benefited its landowners.
