Named for President John Tyler, the city was established on April 11, 1846. Tyler is the largest city and county seat of Smith County. It is also the largest city in Northeast Texas and second largest city of the Ark-La-Tex. In 1985, the international Adopt-a-Highway movement originated in Tyler. Tyler is known as the "Rose Capital of America". This nickname came from a long history of rose production, cultivation, and processing. The largest rose garden in the US can be found here. The Tyler Rose Garden is also home to the annual Texas Rose Festival. Tyler is also the largest retail, medical, and business center in East Texas.
