Review of Cartermere Farm by TexasRealFood

A family farm just outside of Celina, Cartermere Farm is close to people in Northcentral Texas.

The farm sits in three hundred acres of land, by which, 38 acres is a lake. The lake made it to the farm's name. The family who owns the lake are the Carters, and the old English word for lake is mere. Therefore, Cartermere literally means Carter's Lake.

The farm tries to produce the best quality food they can while sticking to organic and sustainable methods.

Nelson Carter, the owner, now sells fresh eggs, organic produce, and grass-fed lambs.

Grass Fed / Pastured

The term “grass fed” (as opposed to grain fed) refers to meat obtained from cows that were raised on a diet of grass and other forage, such as clover; situated in pasture and, when fresh grass is unavailable, hay. This helps to denote the difference between livestock that has been raised in feedlots and generally fed a diet of soy and corn, versus animals that have had access to their natural feeding environment in pasture, which contains grasses, wildflowers, and herbs. This term overlaps with “pasture-raised” and will usually be seen together. Grass-fed beef is also believed to taste better, and be better for the environment, too. There are several organizations that offer a certification for Grass Fed, such as the American Grassfed Association, Certified Grassfed by A Greener World, and Pasture for Life, to name a few.

A non-profit trade organization that encourages the production, processing, marketing and purchasing of poultry raised on pasture. They see pastured poultry as the model for environmentally, emotionally, and economically sensible poultry production that can feed your local communities uniquely nutritious, delicious, and humanely-raised chicken, eggs, turkey, ducks, geese and guineas. Pastured poultry require two things: access to grass (pasture) and frequent movement (rotation). Birds live outside as appropriate for the age of the bird and the season of the year.
