Avoca is an unincorporated community found in Jones County in the US state of Texas. Avoca was founded in 1900 upon the extension of the railroad to the point where it currently stands. Avoca was first named Spring Creek. Earlier, the town had been located some three miles away. Avoca is named after the post office at the former location. The post office had been called Avo but was changed to Avoca upon its relocation. The most notable person in Avoca was Charles Stenholm who lived in the area while he served as a House of Representatives member. Avoca’s population was 500 in 1908 but reduced to 121 in 2000 due to the appeal of neighboring cities and towns, changing transportation patterns, depression, and drought.
