The US town of Bronte is located in Coke County in the state of Texas. Its population as per the 2010 census, was 999. The town was founded in the 1880s and named after Charlotte Bronte, an English novelist. The first settler in the area was known as J. B. McCutchen, who drove his cattle from Santa Anna into the area in1889. Other settlers such as Dr. W. F. Key soon followed and helped Bronte to start the town. Lumber would be hauled from Ballinger to Bronte’s early buildings. Before the name Bronte, the town was originally named Oso, then renamed to Bronco. However, Bronco was rejected by the post office so as not to confuse it with another town by a similar name.
