Forestburg is located in southeastern Montague County. During the early 1850s it was settled by cattlemen but was undeveloped due to frequent Indian raids until the 1870s. Its name was originally Horn Hill but was changed soon after its founding to Forest Hill because of its location in a grove of live oak trees. It was changed again when the name was rejected. The community of Forestburg is served by the Forestburg Independent School District and home to the Forestburg High School Longhorns. The economy was dominated by sawmills and cotton gins. In 2000 the population had dropped to 50.
