Gary City goes back to the 1840s when J.H Thomas arrived in the area and built his farmhouse. Other people joined him and the community soon started growing cotton as their main crop. The community used to be called Zuber when a post office opened under that name. When the railroad that was connecting Timpson and Carthage was passing through the town the railroad reached the property of Thos Hull. He saw an opportunity of being a stop on the railroad line and made a partnership with S. Garrison. Hull donated 20 acres of his land for the town and S. Garrison named the town after his grandson Gary.
